Why does UV-C inactivate viruses, microbes, and bacteria?
UV-C is an electromagnetic radiation that destroys the ability of microorganisms to reproduce, causing photochemical changes in nucleic acids. Wavelengths in the UV-C range are particularly harmful to the cells of microorganisms, because they are absorbed by nucleic acids, disabling their ability to perform vital cellular functions. The germicidal efficacy of UV-C reaches its maximum at approximately 250–265 nm; this corresponds to the UV absorption by bacterial DNA. UV-C radiation has proven to be an effective method of disinfection for over 90 years.
